The Red O

The Experience was recently invited to sample the menu at Rick Bayless’ Red O restaurant in West Hollywood.  This is a great location on Melrose and Crescent Heights. The atmosphere is just stunning. There are high ceilings, comfortable dinning chairs and a breezy patio that can seat large parties. The restaurant has an outdoor feeling in the main dining area due to large doors that open up the front of the restaurant.

We were greeted by a helpful staff that sat us in the main dinning room. Our server, Carly, greeted us warmly and offered us a drink menu. We started with cocktails. The Gimlet was served in a stem cocktail glass. The bar is up to date. They used freshly made garnish and ingredients. There was plenty of Gimlet. The drinks from the bar really opened up the pallet. There was a guitar duo playing flamenco guitar in the bar. It was nice and at a volume that allowed for good conversation.

The Yucatan food at The Red O is simply amazing. Having lived in Los Angeles for twenty years, I’ve dined at many Yucatan themed restaurants.  The menu at The Red O is a fresh take on Mexican food.  Rick Bayless is the celebrity chef who has put together the menu. This is Mexican with an American gourmet flavor. I have to say, the food is truly incredible.

Next, our server Carly, gave us a sampling of appetizers. We started with the beef short rib sopas. Wow, this was amazing. Made fresh and a beautiful presentation. This was so delicious. For vegetarian appetizers, we tried the goat cheese tamales. This is The Red O’s most popular appetizer. And again, it was light and delicious. I could’ve eaten a pile of these tamales. Finally, we tried the FreshOyster Platter with Ceviche. The presentation was great. The oysters were served in a giant bowl of ice. These are local oysters, and the taste was incredible. They were served with a tomatillo-habanero mignonette and a smokye chipotle-garlic salsa. I could’ve eaten another dozen of these. For the ceviche, we had four to try from. The ingredients included albacore, pacific tuna, shrimp, octopus and fish.

The Maine Lobster Tostadas with poblano-pea puree looks incredible Also the Bloomsdale Spinach & Mushroom Cazuela for Tacos also looks great. Made with Shitake, oysters, cremini mushrooms, and organic bloomsdale spinach.

For the main course, we tried the fresh Maine Lobster, which is a new item on the menu, and the Halibut, which was a special. These were served with the Lollipop Kale salad. The kale salad was something I’ve never tried before. It was a real treat.

Finally for desert, we tried the vanilla ice cream with caramel and nut topping. We also tried some sherbet. Both were beautifully presented and a perfect end to a wonderful meal.

The Experience highly recommends the Red O for dinner or special events. The staff here is 100% dedicated to the dining experience. If you have a chance to dine here, it would be a real treat.
