Experience Magazine Visits Pura Vita: A Vegan Italian Gourmet Hotspot in West Hollywood

Nestled in the vibrant streets of West Hollywood, Pura Vita has long been a beloved destination for those seeking gourmet Italian cuisine with a vegan twist. Recently, the Experience Magazine had the pleasure of dining at this culinary gem created by Chef Tara Punzone, where delicious food and expertly crafted cocktails come together for an unforgettable night out.

A Toast to Vegan Creativity

As the evening began, Erwin Glaub, publisher of the Experience Magazine, kicked things off with the Maracuya Margarita. This refreshing blend of Ola Sol Agave Wine “Tequila,” Americano Rosso Aperitivo, and passion fruit set the stage for what was to come. Meanwhile, I opted for the Non-Alcoholic Negroni, garnished with a fresh orange peel, providing a perfect balance of flavors without the buzz.

To start our meal, Erwin sampled the Lentil Soup, a hearty bowl that was both comforting and satisfying. Its rich flavors were a prelude to the delectable main courses that followed.

The Pomodoro ~ 100% Plant Based. This is the best pasta dish at Pura Vita in my opinion. So tasty!

Pomodoro Pasta ($26): A classic dish featuring spaghetti tossed in a zesty tomato basil sauce and topped with fresh cashew ricotta. It was not only tasty but also incredibly filling.

The salad we shared was top notch. Just the way I like it!

Calabrese Pasta ($27): Bucatini served with a spicy red pepper sauce, shaved Parmigiano, and fresh basil. Erwin polished off every bite, clearly impressed by the dish’s bold flavors.

The Carbonara with spaghetti, avocado, egg & macadamia Romano cream and shiitake bacon.. So good!

The Showstopper: SAN GENNARO Pizza

The evening’s standout was undoubtedly the SAN GENNARO Pizza ($27). Topped with cashew mozzarella, Italian sausage crumble, and a medley of fennel, peppers, and onions, this pizza was a revelation. With the added kick of Calabrian Chili Peppers, it quickly became the highlight of our meal. Despite our many visits to Pura Vita, this pizza opened our eyes to a new way to experience Chef Punzone’s culinary artistry.

A Sweet Finale

To wrap up the evening, Erwin was blown away by the Chocolate Chip Cookie Sundae, served warm in a cast-iron skillet. The combination of freshly baked cookie and velvety ice cream was the perfect end to our meal. I also enjoyed a shared salad that added a refreshing touch to our dining experience.

The Chocolate Chip Cookie Sundae was a freshly made cookie sundae. This was so delicious

Chef Tara’s new book

The history of vegan Italian noodles in Los Angeles showcases the city’s dynamic culinary evolution, where traditional Italian food meets innovative plant-based cooking. Italian immigrants brought their rich culinary traditions to the region in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, establishing classic pasta dishes that became staples. As health trends rose in the late 20th century, the demand for plant-based options grew, leading chefs to experiment with alternatives like chickpea and lentil flour in pasta, making Italian cuisine more accessible to those with dietary restrictions. The vegan movement gained momentum in the 1980s and 1990s, resulting in dedicated plant-based restaurants that creatively adapted traditional recipes. In the 2000s, the explosion of vegan dining saw establishments like Pura Vita offering gourmet vegan pasta dishes that appeal to a diverse clientele. Today, Los Angeles has a vibrant array of vegan Italian noodle offerings, reflecting a broader cultural shift toward health-conscious, sustainable dining while celebrating the versatility of Italian cuisine.
