The One Piece franchise has exploded again with yet another adventurous tale from famous writer and artist Eiichiro Oda. The 13th movie in the One Piece series, Gold has now released in Japan and the United States.

Selling over 400 million copies of its manga since the initial release in 1999, One Piece has gained the hearts of many youth and adults all over the world. A delightful animated feature, the One Piece world creates yet another inventive atmosphere filled with bold action and vivid animation. Toei Animation and director Hiroaki Miyamoto bring artist Eiichiro Oda’s storyline and artwork to life in this new adventure for Luffy and his friends.

The movie begins with the Straw Hat Pirates visiting the Gran Tesoro, a six-mile floating casino and entertainment ship where everything is made of pure gold. The ambiance is similar to that of Las Vegas, where stakes are high, anything is possible, and everything is worth the risk. Owner and mastermind Gild Tesoro along with his assistant Baccarat welcome the Straw Hat crew with open arms, treating them as VIP royalty, offering lavish gifts and access to exclusive areas of the ship.

Luffy and his friends have the time of their lives using the money ‘gifted’ to them from Gild Tesoro, cashing in on their luck win after win. They are finally lead to the high stakes table by Baccarat, in which the winner takes all or nothing.

Just as the Straw Hat Crew are confident of their win, Baccarat uses her cursed fruit power, taking all their good luck away and making them lose everything that they’ve won. This is where Gran Tesoro’s scheme is exposed.

Gran Tesoro scheme challenges gamblers with high stakes reaping big rewards, only causing them to lose on purpose. Gild Tesoro obtains control of the ship by forcing everyone into debt, leaving people with no choice but to remain on the ship and work off their debt.

The loss from the Straw Hat Crew is so much that Gild Tesoro takes crew member Zoro as hostage, threatening to kill Zoro unless the money is not returned by midnight the next day. As Luffy and his friends are hit with the hard realization that they may lose their friend, the crew along with some newly introduced characters devise a grand plan to fool Gil Tesoro himself.

Although One Piece is a fictional story with fictional characters, this animated film speaks an underlying truth of the rich and poor class society. With the many struggles the Straw Hat Crew face, one is able to relate to the movie and engage with Luffy and his friends. One Piece Gold is yet another entertaining adventure for the Straw Hat Crew and its fans alike.

One Piece Film: Gold will hit North American theaters for a limited engagement January 10 – 17, 2017. Tickets can be purchased online in advance at www.funimationfilms.com/onepiecegold.
