The Experience recently sat down for a vegan lunch at California Monster Salad on Santa Monica Boulevard in downtown Santa Monica. It was a real treat. Co owner Stacy Simon and manager Jason talked to us about this green restaurant. The lunch crowds are huge at California Monster Salad. Lining up for a healthy lunch, many of the beautiful people and busy professionals frequent this spot. They’ve been open for three years. And the concept is great. It’s a sort of Chipotle for salads. You can choose a salad from the menu or make your own. You start by selecting the greens. For around $10.00 you get a huge pile of greens. Spinach, romaine, and baby greens are the three choices. And you can mix those up as well. Then you choose from the toppings. The Chicken Coastline salad is very popular, a well as the vegan kale wrap. We ordered China Seaside salad, which is a vegetarian option on the menu. It features romaine lettuce, carrots, water chestnuts, edamame, Mandarin oranges, sunflower seeds and a sweet Asian dressing. The dressings at California Monster Salad are out of this world. Manager Jason let us sample a few of the sauces and they were really delicious. The dressing makes the salad. Co owner Stacy Simon explained that the toppings, like water chestnut and carrots, provide the important crunch and the toppings really deliver the flavor. The sweet asian dressing was really good. I could’ve eaten the entire salad with just this. However, the beet mandarin orange sauce was like nothing I’ve ever had before. It was so good. You can pour it on the lettuce or use it as a dipping sauce. The flavor was incredible. Also tasty was the wasabi cucumber sauce. Again, I think this is unique to California Monster Salad. The lemon sunflower fresh basil dipping sauce was also fantastic. I ate a huge bowl of salad that I thought I’d never finish. I also dipped into the chipotle ranch dipping sauce. It was so good. They don’t use any mayonnaise in these sauces and dressings, which keeps the calories and the fat down. Aside from the salad, we tried a couple of other items from the menu. The deviled eggs were so good. Stacy Simon told me that they don’t use ANY mayonnaise in these. I couldn’t believe it. With just egg yolks, mustard and relish this was a real treat. The lavish wraps were also just unbelievably tasty. We tried a vegan wrap that featured soy chicken. I couldn’t believe the flavor. I highly recommend these. With our lunch, we also tried the Kale Lemonade. I was impressed with the freshness and the flavor. I was full all day after eating lunch. It was great. While we we’re in the restaurant, Stacy and Jason were working on a huge catering order that was going out. I’m sure the actors and professionals in the area really enjoy eating this as opposed to craft services. A cool environmental aspect of California Monster Salad is that they use electric bikes to deliver in the downtown Santa Monica area. I can’t wait to go back to California Monster Salad. This is an affordable lunch spot in the heart of Los Angeles. Website; http://californiamonstersalads.com
