Special Olympics Southern California Celebrates 15th Annual Pier del Sol Event
Barry & Nancy Sanders to be Honored at Historic Santa Monica Pier Fundraiser

Santa Monica, Calif., Sept. 30, 2011 — With a “Stars ‘N Stripes on the Pier” theme, Special Olympics Southern California is holding it’s annual Pier del Sol fundraiser on Oct. 14 at 10 a.m. on the Santa Monica Pier at Pacific Park.

This year’s event includes a VIP brunch with spectacular cuisine from more than 35 of LA’s top restaurants, including Chef Josiah Citrin of Melisse, Chef Michael Cimarusti of Providence, Chef Michael Voltaggio of Ink and Chef Alain Giraud of Maison Giraud.

New this year, attendees will have their chance at the Prize Drawing Extravaganza to win 12 different fabulous prize packages from vacations to shopping sprees to Foodies packages. Packages can be viewed on the website at www.pierdelsol.org. Attendees will also enjoy a pie baking and chili cook off contest as well as arts and crafts; karaoke; entertainment from Square Dancers and barbershop quartets; and access to all the rides and games at Pacific Park.

“Pier del Sol is a day that the whole family can enjoy, while giving back to the community and our Special Olympics athletes,” said Bill Shumard, President and CEO of Special Olympics Southern California. “Each year this event gets better and we hope the public will continue to come out and enjoy the wonderful cuisine, live music, and games on the historic Santa Monica Pier at Pacific Park.”

At this year’s fundraiser, Special Olympics will honor Barry and Nancy Sanders, a couple deeply involved in Los Angeles civic leadership. Barry is President of the Board of Commissioners of the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, and on the Board of Commissioners of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. He is author of the recently published book American Avatar (Potomac Books, 2011), and is an adjunct professor of Communications Studies at UCLA. He also served as a Director of Special Olympics Southern California and is now on the Board of Special Olympics World Summer Games—Los Angeles 2015.

Nancy serves on the boards of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. She has served as President of the Art Museum Council of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art as well as president of the Planned Parenthood Guild. Additionally, she has held board positions with The NPR Foundation, the Curtis School, the Joffrey Ballet, the UCLA Art Council, the Children’s Bureau of Los Angeles and most recently LA’s Best.

“The Sanders have contributed to our movement over and over,” said Shumard. “They are an amazing duo very compassionate and caring for our athletes. Their support doesn’t go unnoticed

Along with many celebrities and sports figures, Maria Shriver and current Santa Monica councilman Bobby Shriver, will be attending as the honorary chairs.

General Admission tickets are $45 and include unlimited rides, eight game tickets, and a meal coupon for Pacific Park’s food plaza. VIP Coaster Tickets are $150 each or $500 for five tickets and includes an amazing VIP Brunch prepared by LA’s top restaurants, unlimited rides, and 10 game tickets. Since 1997, Pier del Sol has raised more than $7 million, benefiting and changing the lives of more than 11,000 Special Olympic Southern California athletes. Special Olympics Board Member Anita Green joined with Maria Shriver to establish Pier del Sol as a family-focused day of fun and entertainment while raising funds for Special Olympics programs.
